Non Profit Board Development: The Role of the Board

A common topic of discussion in the non profit world is the role of board members in fundraising efforts. Since the primary responsibility of a board can be summarized as governing the organization and ensuring the success of its mission, and fund raising plays a pivotal role in the ability to achieve that goal – fundraising is a critical responsibility of non profit boards.

For non profits, board development is a way of lending credibility to fundraising efforts. The idea is that since board members aren't getting paid for their efforts they must really believe in the organization. Other reasons board involvement in non profit development is so crucial are:
  • Most non profits lack sufficient staff to achieve fundraising goals

  • Personal contacts are crucial for private sector fundraising and board members multiply the pool of prospective donors

Each Board member typically helps establish and carry out various fundraising initiatives, as well as give a personal annual gift. An annual personal contribution allows the non profit to boast that it has complete participation from its Board – an idea that demonstrate a board’s commitment to the organization.

Non Profit Boards: Development Roles

The role of the Board in non profit development will vary by the size and type of organization, composition of the Board, and location. Usually, the Executive Director remains the primary fundraiser and the staff prepares materials for fundraising initiatives. To help define the role of board members:
  • Create clear guidelines for the Board’s role in fundraising

  • Help Board members understand why non profit development is part of their responsibility

  • Develop a fundraising plan with input from employees and Board members
