Non Profit Services Evaluation

The evaluation of programs and services is a vital process for every non profit. It allows for an accurate and thorough review of a non profit’s services and programs so that new ideas for changes or improvements are fairly considered, and if deemed worthy, enacted.

Sometimes, an evaluation from an unbiased third party is necessary, but often a non profit’s services can be evaluated by in-house personnel just as effectively and with as much validity. This process is referred to as empowerment evaluation.

Empowerment evaluation is based on the idea that individuals who design, implement, staff, and/or consume a non profit’s services are in the best position to evaluate the results.

Steps of Evaluation of Non Profit Services

The empowerment evaluation process usually includes the following steps:
  • The evaluation team is asked to set goals as well as specify indicators that the goals have been reached.

  • Create a distinct plan of how the goals will be reached.

  • Delegate responsibilities and create a timeline for each activity.

  • Following the activity or service, assess whether if it was implemented as planned. Compare your intentions to what actually occurred.

  • Have staff members directly involved in planning or the delivery of a non profit’s services and conduct self assessments of performance and quality.

  • Measure any changes that have occurred. This data can be used for future monitoring.

  • Share the results with all individuals in the non profit.

Following the evaluation of a non profit’s services, it is important to realize that acknowledging what doesn’t work is as important as learning to identify what does.
